TO:         South Carolina High School Principals, Science Specialist and Coordinators

The South Carolina Academy of Science is no longer accepting nominations for the 2008 Award for Excellence in Secondary School Science or Mathematics Teaching.

The award consists of a monetary stipend, a plaque and a citation honoring the achievements of the selected Teacher of the Year. The winning candidate will be honored at the annual meeting of the South Carolina Academy of Science on March 20, 2008 at Clemson University. Click here for a list of previous winners.

Nominations are accepted from the principals, superintendents, science coordinators and colleagues of the candidate, as well as from parents of students and from school board members. Nominations from currently enrolled high school students cannot be accepted.

After nominations have been received, each candidate will be asked to submit a biographical sketch and two letters of recommendations to the Selection Committee for evaluation.

If you wish to nominate a science or mathematics teacher in your district for the 2009 Teacher of the Year, please complete the nomination form (coming later in 2008) and return it to me POSTMARKED or via FAX by December 12, 2008. Remember to re-nominate outstanding teachers, since only one is selected from each year's group, and a nominee who may have been a runner-up last year could very well be this year's winner!

I am looking forward to receiving nominations for this prestigious award for another truly excellent teacher once again

Sincerely,

Tom Roop, Ph.D.
