Nominations for Councilor (Serve to June 2007)
Dr. Radman M. Ali Dr. Ali is currently Professor of Biology and Chair of the Division of Natural Sciences and Mathematics at Morris College, Sumter, South Carolina. Dr. Ali holds a B.S. in Zoology and a M.S. in Microbiology from Miami University, Oxford, Ohio. Dr. Ali received the Ph.D degree in Zoology/Physiology from Clemson University. Dr. Ali has received both Professor of the Year and Advisor of the Year at Morris College. His research interests have included antihypertensive drugs and a project at the University of South Carolina on genetic engineering and transgenic mice.
Dr. John Baynes Dr. Baynes (Ph.D in Physiological Chemistry, The John Hopkins University) is a Carolina Distinguished Professor and former Chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of South Carolina. He has received the university’s Trustees Professorship Award and the Russell Research Award for Excellence in Science and Engineering. Dr. Baynes’ research program on glycation of protein in diabetes has been funded for over 25 years by the NIH and has been awarded MERIT status on three consecutive reviews. Dr. Baynes currently heads the South Carolina Biomedical Research Infrastructure Network (SC-BRIN).
Dr. J. David Gangemi Dr. Gangemi is currently Director of the Institute for Nutraceutical Research at Clemson University, and Executive Director of the National Nutraceutical Center, a statewide consortium. Dr. Gangemi (Professor of Microbiology and Molecular Medicine at Clemson) holds the B.S. degree in Microbiology from Clemson University and the Ph.D from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. His awards included Faculty Member of the Year, Research Fellowship by the Katholieke Universiteit of Leuven, Belgium and the O’Neill Barrett Teaching Excellence award, USC School of Medicine. Dr. Gangemi’s research has focused on the treatment of viral diseases by both pharmaceutical and nutraceutical compounds.
Dr. Sharon Gilman Dr. Gilman is currently Assistant Professor of Biology at Coastal Carolina University. Dr. Gilman holds the B.A. degree in Biology from McDaniel College, Westminster, Maryland and the Ph.D degree in Biological Oceanography from the University of Rhode Island. Dr. Gilman’s teaching has included undergraduate courses in evolution, history of biology and marine ecological processes in coastal and wetland environments. Dr. Gilman’s research is primarily in the area of science education but also in the areas of marine and fish ecology. Dr. Gilman maintains numerous connections with regional K-12 science teachers.
Dr. Cassandra J. Runyon Dr. Runyon presently is Associate Professor of Geology at the College of Charleston. Dr. Runyon also holds the position of Director of SERCH, a NASA Office of Space Science, which coordinates space science education efforts over a 15 state region. Dr. Runyon holds the B.S. degree from SUNY-Fredonia, the M.S. degree from Southern Illinois University and the Ph.D from the University of Hawaii at Manoa in geology and geophysics. Dr. Runyon’s awards include being named a NASA/ASEE Summer Faculty Fellow, Johnson Space Center and the AWG-Phillips Petroleum Distinguished Speaker for three years. Dr. Runyon’s research interests have focused on the history and geomorphology of volcanic features on the terrestrial planets using remotely sensed data from a variety of sources.
