| TO HOST ANNUAL MEETING |
The College of Charleston and Francis Marion University will co-host the 77th South Carolina Academy of Science Annual Meeting on Friday, April 16, 2004 at the College of Charleston. Annual Meeting information is available on the SCAS web-site (http://www.erskine.edu/scas/home.htm) and in this Newsletter.
Meeting sessions for the South Carolina Junior Academy and the Senior Academy will be held Friday morning and afternoon. A General Session is scheduled from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM. At this session, an Awards Program will include the presentation of the Governor’s Awards for Excellence in Science and the Academy’s Award for the Science or Math Teacher of the Year.
The 2004 Plenary Session, Science of the H.L. Hunley: Interdisciplinary Study of a 140 year-old Submarine, will be presented by Dr. Scott Harris of Coastal Carolina University. The Plenary Session will summarize information, publications and the most recent research on the Confederate Submarine H.L. Hunley. Dr. Harris’ studies focus on geomorphology, stratigraphy, and geoarchaeology, with particular interest in the coastal plain and continental shelf regions. He has been a marine geoscientist with the Hunley project since 1998, and worked with the archaeological team in the Spring 2003 as a part of Coastal Carolina University’s public engagement program. Information about two additional presentations, The Search for the Final Crew on April 15th and a Behind-the-Scenes Tour of the Hunley Project on April 16th is available on the Hunley web-site http://www.hunley.org. The burial of the Hunley crew will take place on April 17, 2004. The Academy Business Meeting will follow the Plenary Session.
The SCAS Annual Meeting provides an opportunity for competition among students at the high school and two-year college levels, as well as among undergraduate and graduate students. Topical sessions for the Senior Academy and the Junior Academy will be held in the Hollings Science Center and the Education Center. Members of the Academies are encouraged to attend the meeting and ask their colleagues and students to join them. Program information and lodging information is included in this newsletter and on the SCAS web-site. The 2004 Annual Meeting is partially supported by Roche Carolina Inc., MeadWestvaco, Michelin, Santee Cooper, Milliken & Company, and The Liberty Corporation.
The South Carolina EPSCoR/IdeA programs will host a half-day workshop on faculty mentoring on Thursday, April 15, 2004 at the College of Charleston. The workshop will focus on junior faculty mentoring by senior faculty, and will include specific ideas and exercises for enhancing the professional careers of junior faculty members.
