Important Notes!! Please read!

 1) What a great day!! The weather was beautiful, the workshop had full capacity, and once again we had a blast. A huge thank you goes out to Newberry College and Dr. Charles Horn for all his hard efforts. Everything was fantastic! We owe our gratitude to Connie McMorris of Newberry Middle School and Kelly Hawkins of Mid-Carolina Middle School for organizing and recruiting the presiders, and for all the door prizes!! We had so many prizes to give away this year, it was amazing.
Thank you to the Newberry College students who helped keep the students safe headed to the correct classrooms.
Thank you to all of our presenters. Every year I see the students get more and more active in these sessions, which tells me the presenters are doing an awesome job!! We cannot thank them enough for their help.
And we thank all those who attended. The workshop is for you and students, parents and teachers across the entire Midlands region. It always pleases us to see so many children learning something new, having fun, getting excited about science. Science really is a lot of fun, so we hope each of these children continue to experiment, investigate and explore its possibilities.

 2) Topics brought to my attention: Many people wanted to know of their registration confirmations and session assignments prior to the workshop. Normally, we have not done this because responding to over 800 people while trying to organize the last minute details of the workshop is quite a task. However, it is an area we will look into. There may be a method to get it done, and it will be explored.

  3) Topics I feel compelled to mention for next year:  a) many schools are participating as a group more, and that is excellent. We love having school groups and seeing the Midlands schools making MESAS a part of their activities. However, for both school groups and individual registrants, we once again strongly encourage parental participation. It is not an easy task to monitor 800 children. We always have many volunteers to point students in the right direction and keep them safe, yet we always feel more comfortable about each student's safety, not to mention keeping them from wandering the halls and goofing off (unfortunately, a normal occurrence every year by some students), when a guardian or parent is overseeing their behavior. If the children are with a school group, please help chaperone with the teachers. If your children registered as individuals, feel free to attend the workshop with them to see what they are learning. You may even learn something, too.
Luckily, we have fantastic attendees, both students and adults, and we have minimal problems with this. I am merely trying to nip any future problems in the bud with my statement.
  b)  we are always interested in feedback, both good and bad. We cannot improve without hearing from the very people we are trying to serve. Never be shy to contact us with an opinion or suggestion at
kurlycha@gwm.sc.edu or 803-777-8759.

  4) Remember to keep an eye out for our 2008 MESAS Contest coming out at the turn of the year. If you attended this fall workshop at Newberry, you will not need to pay to enter the Contest.
