2002 MAIL-IN CONTEST FOR MEMBERS OF SCAS/MESAS


Contest Rules:

Must be a member of MESAS or join MESAS by sending a $3.00 check with your contest to Dr. Don Jordan, Executive Director SCAS/MESAS, Research Group, Carolina Plaza, Columbia SC, 29208; Phone 777-7007. All students who attended any of the MESAS workshops in 1999, 2000, or 2001 are automatically members. The four 1999 Workshops were: (1) Western MESAS at Erskine College, (2) Midland MESAS at Newberry College, (3) Lowcountry MESAS at Charleston Southern University and (4) Sandhills MESAS at Frances Marion University. The 2000 MESAS Workshops were or will be held at the following sites: (1) Western MESAS at Greenwood SC (January 20, 2001), (2) Midlands MESAS at SC State University, (3) Sandhills MESAS at Coastal Carolina University, and (4) Lowcountry MESAS at Charleston Southern University. The two 2001 MESAS Workshops were held at the following sites: (1) Midlands MESAS at USC October 6, 2001 and (2) Lowcountry MESAS at Charleston Southern University on November 3, 2001. The membership dues were included in the registration fee (MESAS membership is just $3.00 per year).

2. Must complete all questions on entry form and mail to:
SCAS MESAS CONTEST c/o Don Jordan, Research Group, Carolina Plaza, Columbia, SC 29208.

3. Deadline: Entry must be postmarked by Friday, March 15, 2002.

4. There will be lots of winners not just one or two. Each school will have at least one winner.

5. A student member of SCAS MESAS can enter only one contest. Enter either the MESAS Contest for grades 4-6 or the MESAS Contest for grades 6-8.

6. Everyone participating will be recognized. Teachers/Parents will collect the entries and mail as a package to above address. Results will be returned to Teachers/Parents/Principals.

7. Prizes will vary in value. All winners at each level will be awarded prizes.

8. Cash Prizes in 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, & 2001 ranged from $25 to $100. We recognized at least one winner at each school and sometimes at each grade level. We recognized five to ten Regional Winners and five to ten State Winners as well as two to eight Grand Prize Winners.

9. Results will be announced in the SCAS Newsletter and Bulletin. In addition, results will be published in the SCJAS Newsletter in May. Schools will be asked to announce winners at one of their assemblies for students. Winners will also be recognized in the SCAS/SCJAS Annual
Bulletin and Newsletters
. Winners receive checks from the S.C. Academy of Science. The checks
will be made out to the student and the sponsor and mailed to the school Principal. Winners may be asked
to (volunteer) display and/or demonstrate their winning results.

10. Each student is held to the code of ethics for entry into this contest. The use of resource materials is encouraged. Each student must work on his/her own except with the group or team
activities (group activities can include parents, friends, or classmates).
